The Centralia Orphans remain atop the rankings once again, this time unanimously, after beating previously ranked #2 Mt. Vernon 57–39. Centralia continues to separate itself from the rest of the field and has looked dominant through the first four weeks of the season.

The Orphans will face several big games over the next couple of weeks:

Tuesday (12/16): Breese Central at Centralia

Friday (12/19): Cahokia at Centralia

Tuesday (12/23): Centralia at Marion

The Marion Wildcats move up to #2 in the rankings after starting the year 4–0. Marion has looked sharp early and will be tested this week with games against Mattoon, Carbondale, and Harrisburg. As mentioned earlier, the Wildcats will also host Centralia later this month in a highly anticipated matchup.

With Mt. Vernon and Pinckneyville taking losses, the Woodlawn Cardinals move up to #3 and the Waltonville Spartans move to #4. That sets up a top-five matchup this Friday night when Waltonville travels to Woodlawn.

Nashville remains in the same spot in the rankings, while Goreville moves up to #7 after winning its own tournament, highlighted by a victory over Benton. The Blackcats also took care of business with wins over Zeigler-Royalton and Joppa/Maple Grove. Goreville will face two 2A opponents this week, traveling to West Frankfort before hosting the Carterville Lions.

The Sparta Bulldogs make their first appearance in the rankings this season after winning the DuQuoin Tip-Off Tournament and defeating Carlyle. Sparta will be tested this week with two road games against Wesclin and Okawville.

The Benton Rangers round out the top 10, sitting at 6–1 on the season. Benton’s only loss came against Goreville in the championship game of the Goreville Invitational, but the Rangers continue to impress defensively, allowing just 38 points per game.

Benton has three games on the schedule this week. The Rangers will travel to Murphysboro, a team currently receiving votes, host Anna-Jonesboro in a conference matchup (a team Benton defeated 41–33 at Goreville), and then hit the road Saturday, December 20th, to face Cairo. While Benton and Cairo have met many times in the Benton Invitational, this will mark the first time Benton has ever played at Cairo.
