After a 14-14 deadlock at the end of the first quarter, the Marion Wildcats exploded in the second, scoring 36 unanswered points on their way to a decisive conference-opening victory over Mt. Vernon.

Seniors Callahan Roper and Junious Thomas led the charge for the Wildcats. Roper was sharp through the air, completing 18 of 28 passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns. Thomas proved to be his top target, hauling in seven catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns, while also making his presence felt on defense with an interception in the second quarter.

The Wildcats’ defense turned up the pressure in the pivotal frame as well. Hudson Wade forced a turnover with an interception and a fumble recovery, helping Marion take full control of the game before halftime.

For Mt. Vernon, CJ Hughes-Disroe provided a bright spot with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries, but the Rams couldn’t quite keep pace with Marion’s offensive explosion.

The win moves Marion to 2-1 on the season, while Mt. Vernon fall to 1-2.

Marion will travel to Althoff Catholic in Belleville this Friday, while Mt. Vernon will be back at home against Collinsville.
