It was a defensive-heavy game in Benton on Friday night as the Southern Illinois Game of the Week featured the Benton Rangers and the DuQuoin Indians. DuQuoin opened with a short kick and recovered, setting up Jeremiah Jones for a score on the second play. That would be the Indians’ only points of the night. Benton answered with an eight-minute drive to tie the game, and from there the defenses took over. Still, Riley Spencer broke loose for over 200 rushing yards, while Drake Porter added 58 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The Rangers pulled away with a 17-7 win to open conference play and improve to 4-0, while DuQuoin suffered its first conference loss, falling to 3-1. Next week, Benton hits the road to face Anna-Jonesboro, while DuQuoin returns home for Homecoming against Pinckneyville.
